BATON4CANCER in aid of Blood Cancer UK
During the month of June 10 members of staff from the Division of Population Medicine, Centre for Trials Research and School of Pharmacy at Cardiff University dusted off their sportswear and donned their trainers to raise much needed funds for Blood Cancer UK as part of the Baton 4 Cancer initiative. The reason we chose Blood Cancer UK as our chosen charity for the initiative is that Blood Cancer UK provides crucial funding for important research at Cardiff University. In addition to this one of our team sadly lost their Dad to Non Hodgkins Lymphoma in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A forecast by University College London suggested that nearly 20 000 more patients could die from cancer in the next year because of lack of treatment during the coronavirus lockdown. Therefore, we decided throughout the month of June a team of 10 of us would exercise for a total of 20,000 minutes ie. each of us would try to complete 2000 minutes of exercise throughout the month.
Due to covid restrictions most of our exercise was undertaken either alone or with our families though we did mange 4 socially distanced group exercise sessions, namely a waterfalls walk in the beautiful Brecon Beacons, a bootcamp exercise session in Heath Park, a CrossFit session at ION Cardiff and a 17km hike around the Cardiff suburbs. Individually we ran, walked, jogged, stepped, HIIT, yoga’d and cross fitted our way through June which was no mean feat with work to undertake and families to take care of/ferry around!
Our team members Haroon Ahmed, Emma Matthews, Holly Peters, Leigh Sanyaolu, David Gillespie, Lisa Hurt, Efi Mantzourani, Becca Milton, Rebecca Cannings-John and Tim Pickles kept up morale during our mammoth task by using WhatsApp to encourage one another and to buoy one another when we were struggling to fit it all in.
We achieved our 20 000 minutes of exercise a fantastic 4 days early on Sunday the 27th of June. We had a fantastic time undertaking the Baton 4 Cancer challenge. It was a great team building exercise. We all felt a profound sense of achievement in completing the challenge and raising an amazing £2140 for Blood Cancer UK, which was more than double the target we had set ourselves.
Our just giving page remains open so if you feel able to donate to this fantastic cause head on over to our Just Giving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/emma-matthews47. Hopefully one day together we will beat blood cancer!
Roll on Baton4Cancer 2022!
