Professor Tom Crosby

Tom Crosby

We were delighted to hear the recent news that Tom Crosby has been awarded a Personal Chair by Cardiff University. The position affords Tom the title of professor and reflects some of the fantastic work he has done in the field of cancer research.

Prof Crosby had this to say:

I am delighted to be awarded the title of Honorary Professor by Cardiff University. I have been involved in clinical research for the past 20 years and in the last 10 have been fortunate enough to lead three UK multi-centre clinical trials of radiotherapy in oesophageal cancer. These have changed clinical practice in terms of improving the way oesophageal radiotherapy is delivered and has led to unprecedented outcomes with this approach.

I would hope that the award also partly recognises the work I have undertaken in the ‘Cancer Network’ supporting the development and implementation of the Cancer Delivery Plan and not least achieving the commitment within this plan to develop a new Cancer Research Strategy for Wales. I have always felt that research should be embedded in to high quality clinical services and am unapologetic for my view that participation in high quality research is one of the best quality metrics for cancer services.

I have been touched, and a little embarrassed, by the response from both academic and NHS colleagues. I hope this award will help me in further developing oesophago-gastric, radiotherapy and all cancer services and in particular further developing the relationship between Velindre NHS University Trust and Cardiff University.
