Research Inspires Me (RIME) Schools Engagement Project

Ifor ap Glyn

We are delighted to have been awarded a public engagement grant from the Wellcome Trust to engage secondary school pupils with cancer research and literacy in a project called RIME (Research Inspires ME).

We are developing two film-poems to engage young people (age 11-14) with cancer research. The films will be used as part of an education pack to engage key stage three pupils with science using creative methods. The pack will task pupils to write a poem about cancer research for a Wales-wide competition; the winning poems will be displayed publicly at the University Hospital of Wales Clinical Research Facility.

The films will feature celebrated poets, who have composed poems based on conversations with our researchers. We are delighted to be working with the National Poet of Wales, Ifor ap Glyn, who has composed a poem called Ailddychmygu (re-imagining) and with BAFTA-nominated film-poet, Owen Sheers, who has composed a poem called The Song of Us

Filming for the project has taken place and we are currently developing the education pack. If any schools would be interested in getting involved with the pack development, please contact Jodie Bond on BondJ@Cardiff.ac.uk. We are particularly interested in hearing from English, Welsh and science teachers.

This project will help pupils develop a better understanding of what cancer is and how it is being researched in Wales. We aim not only to dispel myths and educate, but also to inspire a future generation of cancer researchers to help tackle the disease. By engaging with pupils before GCSE choices, we aim to influence future career aspirations at a pivotal moment in their education.
