Surgical Oncology Lead

Wales Cancer Research Centre (WCRC)

Call for Expressions of Interest

Surgical Oncology Lead

The Wales Cancer Research Centre (WCRC) updated the structure and membership of its leadership team – known as its Centre Executive Committee (CEC) - in Spring 2020. WCRC has continued to look for ways to improve and has identified a gap on the CEC. It is therefore seeking Expressions of Interest (EoIs) from an experienced leader(s) in Wales with a track record of substantial achievement in cancer research to fulfil a new role within the CEC for the remainder of the quinquennium, 2020-25, as outlined below.

WCRCs research strategy 2020-25 focusses its research activities on the ‘cancer journey’ of cancer patients and healthy individuals who are at risk from cancer.  Within WCRC there are four Work Streams, grouped into two Domains, as in the schematic below:

  • Optimum cancer treatment and care has long been recognised to require a multi-disciplinary approach, in which surgeons play a major role in obtaining cures and optimising palliation of symptoms for cancer patients. There has been an increasing realisation, globally, of the need for greater strength in depth of research in cancer surgery. WCRC therefore seeks to strengthen its multi-professional leadership team by creating a new CEC post for a research-active clinician in surgical oncology who will work with wider cancer research teams of clinical and non-clinical researchers to add strength to WCRC’s research for patient benefit.

  • The Surgical Oncology Lead will work within the Treatment and Care Domain, interacting closely with other CEC members, particularly those listed below.

Lines of Reporting

  • The Surgical Oncology Lead will report to the Strategic Leadership Group, via the Domain Lead for Treatment and Care.

Specific responsibilities of the role

  • Represent to the CEC the views of surgical oncology colleagues, across Wales, in all aspects of cancer research
  • Provide regular feedback to the CEC on the latest developments in surgical oncology research, within Wales and internationally.
  • Advise on and contribute to the strategy and delivery of multi-disciplinary research within the Treatment and Care Domain.
  • Set and monitor short-, medium- and long-term performance targets for surgical oncology research against the WCRC Delivery Plan
  • Nurture a research-active environment amongst surgical oncology specialties in Wales
  • Identify and actively encourage the emergence of new Principal Investigators and Chief Investigators amongst cancer surgeons in Wales
  • Work with the Treatment and Care Lead to foster the design and development of world-class, innovative clinical study designs involving surgical procedures and technologies for patients with cancer.
  • Work in partnership with non-surgical researchers and with patient representatives, within Wales and beyond
  • Form productive collaborations with fellow CEC members, particularly the Programme Leads for Radiotherapy, Early Phase Trials, Physiological Assessment and Patient Experience. Other key partnerships will be with the CEC Leads for Multi-Disciplinary Research Groups, for Trials Development and for Non-Medical Clinical Researchers

Responsibilities common to all CEC roles

  • Attend Centre Executive Committee meetings regularly
  • Ensure clinically-relevant, patient-focused cancer research activity
  • Maximise interactions across the cancer research community, both within and beyond their own particular research interests
  • Facilitate integration of, and collaboration between, NHS Wales organisations and Welsh HEIs
  • Ensure that patient/public interests and views are represented in all aspects of WCRC’s work, including close partnership working with patient and public representatives
  • Build research collaborations and partnerships, within and beyond Wales, which increase WCRC’s research capacity, capability and sustainability
  • Advise on and shape WCRC organisational strategy and decision-making
  • Provide advice and support on WCRC’s performance
  • Provide progress reports to the Director, Domain Leads, or Senior Leadership Group (SLG), where appropriate
  • Contribute to WCRC’s interactions with Health and Care Research Wales (HCRW), where appropriate
  • Actively promote maximum leverage of additional research funding from other public funding bodies, commercial and third sector partners, wherever appropriate
  • Facilitate timely research outputs e.g. publications in high-impact, open access journals; patents; spin-out companies etc
  • Ensure WCRC representation at relevant meetings and conferences, where appropriate
  • Act as an ambassador for WCRC, championing its objectives and promoting its activities, wherever possible
  • Oversee implementation of relevant aspects of CReSt Cymru, the All-Wales Cancer Research Strategy, where appropriate

A Joint EOI from two or more individuals who wish to share the role will be considered, where accompanied by an agreed statement of how joint responsibility will add to the success of the role, and how the individuals will work together to be ‘greater than the sum of their parts’.

Expressions of interest should comprise an up-to-date CV and a statement (no more than 200 words) of how you feel you could make an exceptional contribution in this role to the future success of cancer research in Wales.
