WCRC brings science to life at the National Eisteddfod

This week at the National Eisteddfod, visitors of all ages got hands-on with science as the Wales Cancer Research Centre (WCRC) hosted a series of fun and engaging activities in the Cardiff University tent.

From crafting vibrant DNA bracelets to exploring virtual worlds, the WCRC team brought the wonders of cancer research and genetics to life. Visitors of all ages created colourful beaded bracelets representing the genetic codes of a variety of living organisms – from humans to jellyfish – offering a fun, hands-on way to learn how DNA works across the natural world.

Meanwhile, the ‘Cancer Blast’ VR experience took participants inside the human body, where they took the over the role of the immune system to identify and attack cancer cells. The interactive game-style format proved a hit with young people, making complex biology both accessible and thrilling.

“It’s always inspiring to see the public, especially young people, so engaged with cancer research and science,” said WCRC Director Prof. Mererid Evans. “We are thrilled by the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by everyone who stopped by.”

The National Eisteddfod continues to be a platform where culture, language, and innovation meet and today, the WCRC helped science to take a centre stage.
